1971: A milestone game for this Canadien. Montreal’s Jean Beliveau scored the 500th goal of his NHL career. He would score seven more before the end of the season, then retired.
1973: The “L’s” continued to pile up. Philadelphia fell to the Lakers 108–90 for their 20th loss in a row. Three days later, the Sixers ended their skid with a 106–104 victory over Milwaukee.
1982: One of the best trades St. Louis ever made. The Cardinals sent shortstop Gary Templeton to San Diego for another shortstop, Ozzie Smith. In 15 seasons with the Redbirds, “The Wizard” won eleven Gold Gloves, was a 14-time All-Star, and helped the team win three pennants and one World Championship.
Happy birthday today to . . . former Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Ben Oglivie and former San Antonio Spurs point guard James Silas, who are both 77. Ex–Kansas City Chiefs safety Gary Barbaro is 72. Chicago Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson is 32, and Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs is 28.
