1971: A whole lotta points for “Mr. Hockey.” Detroit’s Gordie Howe had a goal and three assists in a 6-5 win over Buffalo. That gave him 1,800 career points.

2000: The trifecta for this racer. Dale Jarrett crossed the finish line first at the Daytona 500. It was the third time Jarrett had won the big race.

2011: This youngster was the big winner. Twenty-year-old Trevor Bayne placed first at the Daytona 500. He was the youngest driver to win the race.

Time to wish a happy birthday today to . . . Boston Bruins Hall of Fame center Phil Esposito, who’s 84. Phoenix Suns Hall of Fame power forward Charles Barkley is 63. Former Phoenix Suns point guard Stephon Marbury is 49. Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander is 43, and former Atlanta Braves catcher Brian McCann is 42.
