1976: A stunner of a trade. Mere days before their season opener, the Oakland A’s traded future Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson and two-time All-Star pitcher Ken Holtzman to Baltimore for Don Baylor and two pitchers. Both Jackson and Holtzman spent just one year with the Orioles, then were on the Yankees’ World Championship team the next season.
1983: An incredible streak. The Islanders’ Mike Bossy notched a goal in a 6–3 win over Pittsburgh. That was his third straight season scoring 60 or more goals.
1990: A blowout in the title game. UNLV upended Duke 103–73. It was the largest margin of victory in an NCAA men’s basketball national championship game.
Birthdays in the sports world today… Former Boston Red Sox outfielder Reggie Smith is 81. Ex-Denver Broncos linebacker Bill Romanowski is 60, and Indiana Pacers power forward Pascal Siakam is 32.
