A legal challenge has been filed in a Prescott-area justice of the peace race, potentially affecting which candidates appear on the ballot.
According to available reports, candidate and current justice of the peace Doug Suits is contesting the nomination petition signatures of two opponents: former Prescott mayor Phil Goode and former city council member Greg Lazzell.
Suits was unanimously appointed in September of 2025 by the Yavapai County Board of Supervisors to fill a vacant seat.
The Suits challenge alleges that the candidates may not have submitted enough valid signatures to qualify.
Under Arizona law, candidates must gather a minimum number of signatures from registered voters in their precinct. Those signatures can be reviewed and challenged in court, and if enough are ruled invalid, a candidate can be removed from the ballot.
No decision has been announced yet, and the case is expected to be resolved quickly due to election deadlines.
