1964: They opened their new home. The Mets played their first game at Shea Stadium. It was not a great opening as New York lost to Pittsburgh 4-3.
1976: This future Hall of Famer played home run derby. Philadelphia’s Mike Schmidt socked four consecutive home runs in one game. That helped the Phillies overpower the Cubs 18-16.
1987: A milestone for Dr. J. Philadelphia’s Julius Erving became the third player in NBA history to reach 30,000 points in his career. He retired that season with a total of 30,026 points.
Time to wish a happy birthday today to . . . former Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Boomer Esiason, who’s 65, and Jacksonville Jaguars Hall of Fame tackle Tony Boselli, who’s 54.
