Officials with the Prescott Fire Department are encouraging residents to take simple precautions to reduce wildfire risk. Through its wildfire risk management campaign, the department emphasizes that small actions can make a significant difference in preventing wildfires. Fire officials are reminding campers to use existing fire rings, keep fires small, and never leave them unattended. Campfires should be completely extinguished with water and stirred until cold, and they say no campfires should be used during fire restrictions.
Those enjoying Prescott’s trails are encouraged to stay on designated paths, avoid smoking, and refrain from parking vehicles in dry grass. Hikers are also asked to practice “leave no trace” principles by packing out all trash.
The department is also highlighting the importance of chain safety. Drivers should carry chains securely, ensure they do not come into contact with metal, and inspect them regularly. Sparks created by dragging chains can quickly ignite dry vegetation and start wildfires.
Vehicle maintenance also plays a role in fire prevention. Fire officials recommend keeping tires properly inflated, avoid parking or driving in dry grass, and ensuring chains, trailers, and metal parts are secure and not dragging. Fire officials add homeowners should create a 30-foot defensible space around their properties by removing dead vegetation, leaves, and debris. Keeping roofs and gutters clear can also help reduce wildfire hazards.
