This Day in Sports History, June 15th

1938: Two in a row for this pitcher. Cincinnati’s Johnny Vander Meer became the only major leaguer to throw two consecutive no-hitters in a 6-0 victory over Brooklyn. His first no-hitter came four days earlier versus Boston.

1953: Two streaks ended in one game. The St. Louis Browns topped the New York Yankees 3-1. The Browns snapped their 14-game losing streak, and in the process ended the Yanks’ 18-game winning streak.

2001: They brought home another title. The Los Angeles Lakers took care of the New Jersey Nets 100-86 in Game Five of the NBA Finals. That made it back-to-back championships for L.A.

Happy birthday today to . . . Chicago Cubs Hall of Fame outfielder Billy Williams, who’s 88. Former Detroit Tigers catcher Lance Parrish is 70. Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame third baseman Wade Boggs is 68. WWE superstar Bayley is 37.
