A thrilling, if nerve-wracking, season opener for the Mayer girls basketball team. The Lady Cats hosted BASIS Flagstaff last night and stayed close with the Lady Yetis throughout the game. In the waning seconds, Taylor McCann nailed a three-pointer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime. That’s where Mayer jumped ahead of BASIS Flagstaff to secure the 31-29 win. McCann ended the night with 12 points, while Isabella Morales netted eight points.
The Mayer boys, meanwhile, were in Flagstaff to face BASIS. It was a one-sided affair that did not go the way of the Wildcats, who lost 55-22. Easton Garcia posted 14 points.
Both the Mayer boys and girls have games today and tomorrow. They are both home to take on Mogollon and Williams.
