Two Dogs Contract Leptospirosis in Yavapai County

Yavapai County Community Health Services announced two confirmed cases of canine leptospirosis. Officials say this is a disease caused by bacteria in contaminated soil, and is spread through urine.

YCCHS Environmental Health Section Manager Cecil Newell reports cases appear every few years, and are usually associated with dogs swimming in irrigation ditches or the Verde River.

Officials report symptoms in dogs can include fever, lethargy, vomiting, and increased thirst and urination. They say if untreated, the disease can cause organ failure and death. Leptospirosis can be transmitted to people via urine and blood.

Officials say to contact your healthcare provider immediately if you suspect you have been exposed, and to contact your pet’s veterinarian if you suspect they have been exposed.
