The Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office will launch a new education-based jail program on May 18th, becoming the first agency in Arizona to adopt the national I.G.N.I.T.E. initiative. Sheriff David Rhodes says the program will help reduce recidivism by providing inmates with access to education, job training, and personal development opportunities.
I.G.N.I.T.E., which stands for Inmate Growth Naturally and Intentionally Through Education, was created by Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson and is now used in dozens of jails nationwide. The program uses a merit-based system that rewards participants for engaging in educational programming and developing new skills.
Sheriff Rhodes says the initiative represents a new approach to public safety by helping incarcerated individuals build purpose, take responsibility, and prepare for success after release.
