County Board of Supervisors Approves Ordinance

Yavapai county officials have approved a new ordinance designed to reduce traffic noise and improve quality of life in several unincorporated residential communities.

The Yavapai county board of supervisors this week adopted ordinance 2026-1, which prohibits the use of engine and compression brakes, commonly known as Jake brakes, in specified residential areas where noise complaints have been most common.

Engine braking is a standard practice used by many commercial vehicles to slow down safely, particularly on steep grades. However, the system can produce loud mechanical noise that residents say can be disruptive when used near homes and neighborhoods.

Under the new ordinance, the county will install roadside signs to alert drivers when they are entering a restricted area. Law enforcement officers will also have the authority to issue a 250-dollar civil forfeiture penalty to drivers who violate the rule.

Board of supervisors chair Brooks Compton says the goal is to balance the needs of commercial transportation with residents’ right to peacefully enjoy their homes and properties. The designated restriction zones include targeted road segments in Williamson valley, Skull valley, Prescott, iron springs, Ho-Kay-Gon, and Cornville.
